Collaborative Engineering aims at providing concepts, technologies and solutions for development in geographically distributed engineering teams, which integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines, including social, cognitive, management, system, decision, and information sciences that are relevant to human collaboration. The increased industrial and academic demand for this innovative approach is based on the fact that networked organization structures (e.g. virtual organizations) are common practice in numerous industry sectors, like automobile, aerospace, electronics or construction. Emerging areas of multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, multi-enterprise, collaboration has become a key issue for agile and flexible engineering processes.
